It’s that time of year when things start to get irritated and the relationship woes flare up!
We’re talking about the battle between winter and our skin. Each year, the season takes its toll on the body’s biggest organ – from harsh weather conditions to our favorite activities to keep us warm. But, can uncomfortable winter skin be prevented?
Without proper hydration, our biggest protector is left undefended, resulting in dry skin and flare-ups of uncomfortable skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
It may be among the most complicated relationships we have.
“It’s important this time of year to retain your skins ceramides,” said skincare expert Dr. Melissa Levin, a Manhattan-based board-certified dermatologist. “Ceramides are lipids that help form the skin’s barrier and help skin retain moisture. Ceramides also help the skin protect against environmental aggressors like irritants, and pollution.”
“There are several ways to take care of your skin during the winter. I highly recommend limiting your showers to 5-10 minutes with luke warm water. After you get out, be sure to pat dry your skin and not harshly rub sensitive skin. You can moisturize immediately after to seal in that protective layer and CeraVe has a great line for every skin type.”
Dr. Levin also recommends the use of a humidifier in the room you sleep in, along with wearing socks to protect your feet and always wear a jacket, scarf and hat.
