“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with [Sopranos creator] David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.” Michael said in a statement to Variety.

The prequel will show the lives of young mobsters during the Newark riots in 1967.  The film was co-written by Chase and Lawrence Konner and will be directed by Alan Taylor.

The cast includes Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, Corey Stoll and appearances from the original cast.

James received one Golden Globe Award, three SAG awards and three Emmy’s for his role on the popular show. In 2013, he unfortunately died of a heart attack at the age of 51.
