A couple got engaged while visiting their favorite hippo, Fiona, at The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden on October 8.
“We went to the zoo for our One Year Anniversary and Fiona was in the window,”said newly engaged Hayley Roll, a recent Bowling Green State University grad and current radiology tech at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. “Nick, my boyfriend and I were waiting in line to get our photo taken with Fiona and I gave my cell phone to someone to take the photo and when I turned back around, Nick was on one knee proposing.”
According to Hayley, no one at the Zoo knew about the engagement or the photo she was able to get from the stranger who helped them capture that perfect moment. It was the first time that the couple was going to visit Fiona in person. “We are huge #TeamFiona fans and have been following her since she was born,” said Roll.
“We’re so happy Fiona could be there on our special day ❤ here’s to many more years of going to zoos with you” Roll’ posted on instagram.
Roll tells The Daily Buzz exclusively that her and her fiancee, Nick Kelble, a student at the University of Cincinnati, are going to wait until after he graduates to get married.
Fiona first caught national attention earlier this year after she was born six weeks premature in January. Born at just 29 pounds, she is considered the smallest hippo to ever survive, and her growth and development has been rigorously documented on the Cincinnati Zoo website, as well as on her own series of videos on Facebook.
The pair plan to get married in Sandusky on July 20, 2019.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fallon featured the happy couple being photobombed by the baby hippo in his monologue.
“Fiona was like, “Always a bridesmaid!” ?
