EA Censors Colin Kaepernick’s Name In Madden 19

EA Sports has censored a mention of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a song featured in Madden 19.

The song ‘Big Bank’ by YG, Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Nicki Minaj is one of the 31 songs selected by EA. The original verse by Big Sean goes like this: “You boys all cap, I’m more Colin Kaepernick.”

However, according to this video by IGN,  this is how it sounds with Kaepernick’s name entirely removed in Madden 19.

Colin Kaepernick is a controversial figure in football and politics for protesting police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, which was the last year of his contract with the 49ers. His protest sent ripples throughout the NFL, and other players began taking the knee, attracting ire from conservative figures and Donald Trump, who tweeted below his disdain of the matter.

Following his departure from the team, Kaepernick remained unsigned, leading him to file a grievance against the NFL and it’s 32 owners last October. The case is ongoing.

As reported by ESPN, EA states that they made an “unfortunate mistake” with their Madden NFL soundtrack. “Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don’t have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn’t affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake.”

Radio Personality and Kaepernick’s partner, Nessa, also pointed out that EA did the same thing to Kaepernick in Madden 18 for the song ‘Bars of Soap’ by Mike WiLL Made-It featuring Swae Lee as well.

Electronic Arts, you have some more explaining to do.
