Demi Lovato deactivated her Twitter account after receiving backlash for commenting on 21 Savage memes.
Rapper 21 Savage was arrested by ICE on Sunday morning and is facing deportation for overstaying his visa. Twitter users created memes about the rapper, and Lovato received hate for tweeting about it.
Lovato wrote, “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”
Twitter users came to 21 Savage’s defense and slammed Lovato. She tried to explain herself before deleting Twitter, writing “If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with some original not involving drugs.”
She also tweeted the meme that she originally thought was funny and said, “FYI this is the shit I’m laughing at…not the fact that anyone is getting deported.”
Lovato posted a series of hateful comments to her Instagram story. “And this is what people say in return?,” Lovato wrote.
The singer clarified on Instagram once again that she would never laugh at anyone getting deported. “wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke..not have I EVER laughed about that. The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let alone their OD,” Lovato expressed.
Rapper Offset defended 21 Savage on Twitter. “ALL THE MEMES AND SHIT AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AINT SHIT FUNNY HIS FANILY DEPENDING ON HIM,” he wrote.
