Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States and now one of the nation’s largest assessments of people living with the disease is revealing the devastating physical and emotional toll of that daily pain for millions of Americans. Comedian and TV host Matt Iseman knows it all too well. The American Ninja Warrior host talked with us alongside Cindy McDaniel, Senior Vice President of Consumer Health for the Arthritis Foundation to talk about the Arthritis Foundation’s new report: A Mandate for Action, where we go from here, and how your voice can help.
“I have been living with rheumatoid arthritis for about 20 years. RA is an autoimmune disease. My symptoms started back in 2001 and Iwas in the best shape of my life! And over about 18 months my whole life changed. I ended up have pain in my feet, back and neck and ended up gaining about 50 pounds.”
He goes on to say that he was always tired, sleeping through most of the day. Iseman feels “lucky” to have found out about is RA so he could get his life back on track – learning about his physical capabilities suffering though this disease.
Cindy McDaniel, Senior Vice President of Consumer Health for the Arthritis Foundation gave us some key findings in the Mandate for Action report, such as
- 100% of people with arthritis have pain every week, physically and mentally
- 50% of people with arthritis say it’s hard to walk most days
Cindy goes on to say that “the power is in the numbers!” She is encouraging all people who struggle with arthritis to go to Live Yes! INSIGHTS and take the survey, so people who deal with arthritis everyday feel less excluded, and have the information they need.
Iseman’s advice is “you’re not alone!” 50 million American’s deal with the same chronic pain every day, and people may not even know it. He said, “Life can be great with arthritis, and we want to make it better!”
Including his partnership with The Arthritis Foundation, Matt Iseman also is continuing the season of American Ninja Warrior Junior every Saturday night, and is gearing up for season 12 of American Ninja Warrior. Every Monday night, he is on Live Rescue on A&E!
